About The Project

October 2018 – September 2022; funded by Drosos Foundation.

Athar Lina Heritage Design Thinking School is a three-year project that works with craftsperson, designers and artists, as well as, residents of al-Khalifa to transform its heritage into a contemporary line of products, services and activities with the aim of viewing heritage as a resource for income generation.

The project runs three schools targeting children, youth and craftspersons from al-Khalifa, as well as designers, artists and architects from all over Egypt:

  • Children’s Program: (age group of 7 to 13)
  • Youth Program (age group of 14 to 18)
  • Professionals’ Program (age group of 18 to 35)

These programs introduce participants to design-thinking methodologies, heritage education and historical research as the basis for their work. These skills are implemented on a number of tangible and intangible modules varying from wood, textile, tour-guiding to storytelling. The content is delivered through theoretical lectures, readings, hands-on activities and field trips.

In addition to the schools, the project manages Athar Lina’s annual event Spend the Day in Khalifa, runs heritage promotions events and tours and hosts public lectures in the fields of art, design and architecture. Moreover, the project aims to build a network of like-minded artists, crafts-person and designers that use the heritage of al-Khalifa as inspiration to develop products and activities.

The new phase, Heritage Works, is planned to start by the end of 2022, and focuses on introducing heritage industries as potential career paths for youth and women from Historic Cairo in general and al-Khalifa in particular.
