About The Project

June 2014 – ongoing; funded through private donations, sale of Athar Lina products and proceeds from the Private School Program, Drosos Foundation and ALEXBANK

Al-Khalifa Summer Camp builds on the experience gained from the pilot program of Athar Lina School for Art and Heritage. It aims at expanding the range of heritage education activities for children. The program is in accordance with the recommendations of the Participatory Workshop on the Relationship between Monuments and their Surroundings.  The community and other concerned parties agreed that children have to develop a sense of ownership of their heritage at a young age and that this happens when heritage sites are safe spaces for activities that teach children about heritage in an inspiring manner. Fostering this attachment between children and their heritage will result in a society that is proactive in safeguarding its heritage.

Daily summer program for al-Khalifa’s kids run for free with the help of volunteers and non-profit organisations. Al-Khalifa Community Centre was rehabilitated as a safe haven where children learn about their heritage. They participate in art, sports, craft and religious activities in addition to enhancing their basic literacy skills. The centre is run in collaboration with community members.

At the request of parents and children, the educational program was extended into an after-school program. This program includes weekly sessions to help children with their school work, as well as, heritage and educational programs on the weekends.

From 2019 till 2021, the summer camp was organised as a part of Athar Lina Heritage Design Thinking School, funded by Drosos Foundation. In 2022, al-Khalifa Summer Camp activities were supported by ALEXBANK.
