About The Project

November 2013 – ongoing; funded by the British Council, UNESCO Cairo, AIC, crowsourwcing matched by Zoomaal, DEDI, Drosos Foundation, World Learning, Communities Connecting Heritage Superscript program – an initiative of the U.S Department of State, Prince Claus Fund.

Athar Lina uses street art as a medium to highlight the landmarks of the street and to present its stories and myths. This was implemented through Khalifa Inside Out(2013), where two wall murals at the street entrances mapped out the street’s main monuments, workshops, and landmarks.

Other street art projects include:

  • Khalifa Shopfronts which brings together children from al-Khalifa with crafts-persons and designers to beautify the shopfronts.

  • Graffiti and artwork inspired by the Gayer-Anderson Museum artifacts and by al-Khalifa’s crafts and street life in collaboration with local and international artists.

  • Through Walls; a Heritage Dialogue between Athar Lina Initiative and Avenue 50 Studio to celebrate women’s empowerment, and cultural heritage through visual art in Chicano and Egyptian cultures.
  • Augmented Reality Murals; Athar Lina collaborated with artist Agnes Michalczyk to produce five augmented reality murals surrounding Ahmed Kuhya Mosque, depicting daily life in al-Khalifa and another one in al-Khalifa Park designed by one of al-Khalifa youth.

  • Al-Shafi’i Murals; a series of murals guiding independent tourists through al-Imam al-Shafi’i cemetery and informing them of its history through QR codes.

  • Isma’ al-Zaffa (Listen to the Procession); another AR mural, designed and implemented by al-Khalifa youth as a result of an oral history and research module about mawlids’ Zaffas.

  • Al-Khalifa Park Murals; two murals were implemented in al-Khalifa park. One depicting the park’s irrigation process and another mapping the neighbourhood’s most prominent monuments.
