Launching the Safiyy al-Din Jawhar and Yahya al-Shabih domes, and Launch of the Patterns of Cairo Website
08 Jul, 2025
We are pleased to share news of our eventful week at Megawra. On Monday, we launched the Patterns of Cairo website and exhibition opening.
Today, we officially inaugurated the Safiyy al-Din Jawhar and Yahya al-Shabih domes following their conversation over the past two years as part of ERTH - Athar Lina Heritage and Climate Project.
The Patterns of Cairo website (www.patternsofcairo.com), an open access resource, is now live. The launch was celebrated in unison with the opening for the “Designing with Patterns of Cairo” exhibition, which presented a refreshing array of contemporary designs including fashion pieces, textiles, furnishings, and engaging sets, in the presence of designers, creatives, and invited guests. The exhibition remains open to the public throughout today, July 8, until 10pm at Founders Spaces.
The official inauguration of the Fatimid and Mamluk domes today was held in the presence of Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities; Gareth Bayley, British Ambassador to Egypt; Mohamed Ismail, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities; Dr. Ibrahim Saber Khalil, Governor of Cairo; Mark Howard, Director of the British Council in Egypt; and May al-Ibrashy, Chair of the Board of Megawra – Built Environment Collective.
The Patterns of Cairo Project is implemented by Megawra, and initiated by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt as part of its commitment to the digitisation and democratisation of knowledge.
The Athar Lina Climate and Heritage Project - Erth is run by Megawra's Athar Lina Initiative under the supervision of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities with funding from the British Council’s #CulturalProtectionFund, in partnership with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
