October 2013 – ongoing; funded by the British Council, UNESCO Cairo, AIC, crowdsourcing matched by Zoomaal, DEDI and Drosos Foundation.
Spend the Day in Khalifa (SDK) is an annual event to promote al-Khalifa’s tangible and intangible heritage and raise awareness of Athar Lina’s efforts to conserve it through:
Activities include graffiti celebrating al-Khalifa’s heritage and its community, street performances, craft exhibitions, guided tours and interactive heritage education activities. In 2013, the highlight was Chirine El-Ansary’s storytelling performance weaving the history of the street with stories of its people.
In 2015, the SDK expanded into a 3-day event that incorporated the inauguration of Athar Lina’s conservation projects and the closing event of Fus-ha. In 2016, Darb al-Husr football pitch, a collaborative effort between Cairo Governorate and Athar Lina was the setting for sports activities for the children. The band Oscar March roamed the side alleys with music. In 2016, SDK became part of People and Heritage, a heritage celebration event between ten initiatives from six different Egyptian cities.
Starting 2019, SDK came under the umbrella of Athar Lina Heritage Design Thinking School. The sixth edition included the school launch, craft exhibitions, guided tour and a storytelling walk. In 2021, the event celebrated Sabil Umm ‘Abbas, marking the start of an agreement with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to use it for heritage education and promotion.
Athar Lina also organises monthly guided tours to al-Khalifa’s heritage sites with eight different themes such as the Princes and Sultans Tour and the Squares and Markets Tour.
