The Citizen Participation in Historic Cairo Project is a participatory applied research project that studies the following aspects of Historic Cairo as World Heritage site of outstanding “living heritage”:
The work was divided into three subcategories:
Participatory workshops with stakeholders were conducted and a master plan for the area was proposed and was granted preliminary approval from MoTA.
A study of 12 public housing areas with a focus on Zaynhum and al-Mahkama’s open spaces.
The study focused on al-Khalifa Street’s urban fabric, heritage sites and crafts. Collaborative design workshops were carried out with stakeholders to implement pilot interventions and develop a heritage conservation and management plan for the area.
The project shares its outcomes through virtual lectures and the occasional series, Megawra Papers. The series published the conservation of management plan for al-Khalifa and a study of the legal parameters for intervention in Historic Cairo.

Athar Lina is a participatory conservation initiative that aims to establish modalities of citizen participation in heritage conservation based on an understanding of the monument as a resource not a burden.
