Woven Tales: Tour and Khiyamiyya workshop
22 Jan, 2023
We invite you to spend a special day surrounded by the tales and myths of al-Khalifa district! As you walk through al-Khalifa neighbourhood, you will be learning about its vibrant heritage and draw inspiration to design your own khiyamiyya piece. Our stroll will trace the history of al-Khalifa district; starting from the blessed hill and the imaginary mercury lake where boats of rulers floated peacefully, to the enchanted well, and buildings that resemble many rulers’ longing for eternal existence. Passing by timeless crafts such as lantern-making, copper and wood working. Finally, we will conclude with a khiymiyya workshop, where each participant will get the chance to create and go home with their own khiyamiyya piece. This tour starts with al-Sayyida Nafisa square, passes along al-Ashraf and al-Khalifa street ending with Bayt al-Saliba (Athar Lina Headquarters). Following that, we will be joined by Hany Abd El-Qader, a Khiyamiyya artisian who will be leading the khiyamiyya workshop, and guiding participants through making their own design inspired by elements from the tour, and create their own souvenier to take home.
This event is part of the Khalifa Tours program. It is organised by the Built Environment Collective and all revenues go towards supporting the sustainability of the NGO’s educational and community programs in al-Khalifa neighbourhood.
