Tour of al-Sayyida Nafisa Cemetery
21 Dec, 2021
Tour of al-Sayyida Nafisa Cemetery In understanding Egyptian history, one discovers that cemeteries were never solely a place for the burial of the dead. In fact, they were and still are places of prayer, visitation and in some cases residency. The location of graveyards in Cairo was developed in a way that surrounds the mausoleums of religiously relevant individuals that have contributed to Islamic rule and worship. Al-Sayyidah Nafīsah bint Amīr al-Muʾminīn Al-Ḥasan al-Anwar ibn Zayd al-Ablaj ibn Al-Hasan ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib al-ʿAlawiyyah al-Ḥasaniyyah was indeed one of them. Al-Sayyida Nafisa was cherished and admired by Egyptians and she in turn loved the country and its people deeply - to the extent that she wished to be buried and lay to rest in Egyptian soil. Her mausoleum is considered to be one of the first Islamic cemeteries located outside of Cairo and ever since the day of her burial; Egyptians have been keen on burying their loved ones close to her grave. She was always sharing her wisdom and knowledge and surrounding herself by this country's people in her house in al-Khalifa when she was alive and she is still indeed surrounded by them even after her death. Join us in our next tour to explore al-Sayyida Nafisa Cemetery - and understand a pivotal part of Cairene history and landscape.
