Spend the Day in Khalifa 6

For the sixth year in a row, the Athar Lina Initiative will celebrate the heritage of the al-Khalifa neighborhood through the annual tourism promotion event, Spend the Day in al-Khalifa, in collaboration with the Ministry of Antiquities and Cairo Governorate. The program activities will take place in the areas of al-Khalifa, Hattaba, and Zaynhum, from 8th to 16th of February 2019.   This year the Spend the Day in Khalifa program highlights certain projects by the Athar Lina Initiative such as the Conservation of Imam al-Shafi'i Dome. The Spend the Day in Khalifa event includes four principle activities:
  1. Guided tours: in al-Khalifa, Zaynhum, and al-Hattaba.
  2. Interactive activities: Storytelling performance at Imam al-Shafi'i, artistic performances in al-Khalifa and al-Hattaba, children's heritage awareness activities, leather workshop.
  3. Talks: on heritage industries and on al-Khalifa guided tours.
  4. Traditional crafts bazaar for products from al-Khalifa and al-Hattaba
Program Activities:
  1. Al-Imam al-Shafi'i (8, 9, 15, 16 February 2019, 12:30-4 pm): Al-Imam al-Shafi'i will be temporarily open for visits to view the progress of the restoration of the Dome.
  2.  Leather Workshop (Wednesday 13th of February 2019 10am to 4pm): The workshop is presented by German product designer Sandra Fruebing, who collaborated with the skilled Ababda Bedouin craftswomen in the South of Marsa Alam. The Ababda Bedouin craftswomen will be participating in the workshop and presenting some of their traditional products. The workshop will be conducted in English. The project is supported by the British Council UK and Crafts Council UK within the Crafting Futures grant scheme.
  3. Heritage Talks (Wednesday 13th of February 5pm to 6:30pm):
    1. Presentation of al-Khalifa Walking Tours: A presentation about walking tours in Egypt and presenting heritage through guided walking tours. The presentation will be in Arabic. Maissa Mostafa is the coordinator and tour guide in al-Khalifa neighbourhood to raise cultural and heritage awareness about the area, as part of the activities of the Athar Lina Initiative She is also a lecturer in many public places including Greater Cairo Library and Al-Sinari House for topics such as tourism, preservation of culture, Egyptology and how to raise awareness of cultural heritage.
    2. Talk on heritage industries:A presentation by Sandra Fruebing, a German product designer who collaborated with the skilled Ababda Bedouin craftswomen in the South of Marsa Alam.   4. City Tours | Markets and Squares ( Thursday the 14th of February 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm): The tour starts from Rumaila Square to al-Sayyida Aysha market and ends at al-Imam al-Shafi’i. The tour aims to identify the history of markets and squares in one of Historic Cairo’s most important areas. The walking tour is designed by Athar Lina Initiative in cooperation with the Department of Historical Cairo and the Ministry of Antiquities.   5.  A Walking Storytelling performance (Thursday the 14th of February 4pm to5:30pm): A storytelling performance by Chirine El Ansary in which she will weave the story of the street with the tales of the community in a story written specifically for the Dome and the al-Imam al-Shafi'i.   7. City Walk | Al-Hattaba (Friday, 15 February 2019 2:00pm to 4:00 pm): The tour will start at Bab al-‘Azab on Salah al-Din Square and will end at al-Hattaba Community Garden.   8. Tour of al-Khalifa and Zaynhum (Saturday, 16 February 2019 10:00am to 2:00pm): This tour will present the Groundwater Research Project implemented by Athar Lina which explored the issues of groundwater in al-Khalifa and sustainable solutions for the problem. The tour passes through Zaynhum Public Housing as a potential area for the creation of open spaces targeting the needs of the public housing residents. Guide: Maissa Moustafa.   12. Performance by the NGO Tawasol (Saturday, 16 February 2019, 5:00pm to 5:45pm): A performance in al Ashraf street, Khalifa, by the NGO Tawasol for Development of Istabl Antar combining circus and folkloric acts (Rhythmic performance, juggling, hula hoop, acrobatics).
  13. Public Presentations about Athar Lina projects (Saturday, 16 February 2019, 6:00pm to 7:00pm): Athar Lina will offer a public presentation on the projects of the initiative in the area and beyond.
