Al-Shurafa’ shrine is one of the forgotten monuments, located in al-Hattaba neighborhood in Historic Cairo near the Citadel. A Mamluk building currently used as a shrine, its main room must have functioned as a sabil for the dispensation of water.
Conservation activities included: historical research and detailed documentation, cleaning and site preparation, stone masonry conservation, roof works, and tiling. Excavations within the sabil space uncovered a water storage and dispensing system.
This conservation project comes in parallel to the urban regeneration plan for al-Hattaba prepared by Athar Lina, which proposes the reuse of al-Shurafa’ as the flagship space within a craft and design centre.
