About The Project

April 2017 – Ongoing; in collaboration with Cairo Governorate and. Design and research: A for Architecture, Takween, Oregon University, Cornell University, TU Delft and US Forest Service.

Implementation funded by: Cairo Governorate and the Embassy of the Netherlands in Cairo. Design and research funded by: Ford Foundation, the American Research Centre in Egypt, the US Embassy in Cairo, Prince Claus Fund for Culture, US Forest Service

A park located in the heart of al-Khalifa, connecting it to Zaynhum Public Housing Project, its conceptualization and design is the outcome of Athar Lina’s Groundwater Research Project. It is a step towards social and economic development in the sectors of environment, health, education, employment, heritage awareness, tourism promotion and raising the standard of living in the area.

In order to design the park, Athar Lina conducted needs assessment and accessibility studies through field surveys and participatory workshops, which determined its main target groups; women and children.

Moreover, the park fulfills the initiative’s vision to increase green spaces and recreational areas in al-Khalifa. An irrigation system was designed for the park, reusing the groundwater inundating al-Ashraf Khalil and Fatima Khatun domes.

The park’s southern section currently implemented includes:

  • Children’s playground
  • Green spaces and an urban farming section
  • An open theatre
  • Murals on al-Khalifa’s history of the park’s irrigation system
  • Waste collection points

The northern section is to be implemented and is planned to include:

  • Shops, restaurants and cafés.
  • Women’s sports area and kindergarten.
