Woven Tales: Tour and Khiyamiyya Workshop

Join us for an exceptional tour with the women of al-Khalifa neighbourhood, and discover the stories intricately woven by their skilled hands through the art of khiyamiyya, and create your khiyamiyya piece inspired by the heritage of the area. During this tour, the women of al-Khalifa neighbourhood will take us on a journey into their rich stories and experiences. They will narrate their tales through threads and textiles, reviving the memories and heritage of al-Khalifa. Where we'll learn about the stories of the women's descendants of al-Bayt, such as al-Sayyida Nafisa, al-Sayyida Ruqayya, al-Sayyida Sakina, in addition to Sakna Bey, whose house is one of the remarkable sites on al-Khalifa Street. The tour begins at al-Sayyida Nafisa Square, passing through al-Ashraf and al-Khalifa Streets, and concludes at Heritage Workspace, where we will explore the history and stories behind Athar Lina product line and watch short films that documented the creation of notable khiyamiyya tapestries produced by the women, such as Women Quilt for Hattaba and Quiting Her-itage, the latest tapestry created this year. The tour will be followed by an engaging hands-on workshop led by the women. Participants will learn the basics of khiyamiyya art and create their own unique pieces inspired by elements they encountered during the tour, to take home. The tour and workshop will be conducted in Arabic. Time & Date: Saturday 7th December 2024 at 10 AM  This event is a part of al-Khalifa Tours program run by the Built Environment Collective, and all proceeds allocated will support the sustainability of the initiative's educational and community programs in al-Khalifa neighbourhood.
