About The Project

April 2015 – Ongoing; funded by Cairo Governorate and Pepsi and Chipsy companies.

This component aims to increase the efficiency of the urban systems of al-Khalifa for the benefit of both residents and cultural heritage.

  1. Al-Abagiyya football pitch (2016) – The football pitch was established on an empty lot under al-Abagiyya bridge -attached to al-Abagiyya Youth Centre, where construction debris had accumulated over the years. The project included clearing the land, creating the football pitch and increasing pedestrian accessibility to it from within the youth centre. A tournament was hosted during the opening of the pitch. It is currently being used to teach football to local youth.
  2. Darb al-Husr Sports Area (2016) – A 600 sqm plot in Darb al-Husr street was converted into a football pitch and sports area with funding from Cairo Governorate. The murals on the surrounding buildings relate to the heritage, myths and monuments of al-Khalifa.
  3. Al-Hattaba Community Garden (2018) – A public garden was established to provide recreational spaces for the children of al-Hattaba. Work included garbage and debris removal, grading, construction of stone masonry seating, greening, and laying of artificial turf in addition to four murals inspired by al-Hattaba’s history. Work was completed in 15 days and the inauguration included a fun day for al-Hattaba’s children with heritage activities, art, storytelling, sports, gardening, graffiti and origami followed by a group Ramadan Iftar and a puppet show.
