This activity is part of the urban component within Megawra’s Khalifa Exchange Program, which links Athar Lina’s work on the ground in al-Khalifa with a wider mandate of outreach and exchange of knowledge that targets Megawra’s network of practitioners and academics.
The glossary revises standard definitions of street elements and produces new understandings of these elements inspired the specifics of al-Khalifa. This was done through workshops and interviews with both residents and professionals from different fields. The output was recorded in a new volume of Megawra Papers. This came hand in hand with field research and technical proposals that were submitted to governmental partners to support their work to improve the quality of the built environment. The program prepared a study for upgrading al-Khalifa’s street facades, improving mobility and upgrading paving and lighting.
Other components of this program include the implementation of phase 2 of al-Khalifa Park, designing and implementing an activity kit for al-Imam al-Shafi’i Visitors’ Centre and retelling the story of al-Khalifa from the perspective of its women.

Athar Lina is a participatory conservation initiative that aims to establish modalities of citizen participation in heritage conservation based on an understanding of the monument as a resource not a burden.
