September 2021 – September 2022; funded by US Embassy in Cairo. The heritage activity kits funded by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt and in partnership with Imagine IC.
The visitors’ centre offers an informative and engaging experience which starts with the activity room. It offers interactive games and puzzles specifically designed to create a fun and educational experience for children.
These activities include a biographic board game, 3D puzzles reconstructing the Fatimid dome and boat finial, archaeological exercises putting fragmented pottery together, stucco moulds used to replicate the balcony parapet restoration process, stories and myths of the dome, and more. One of its walls features a sealed doorway that led to the Radwan Agha al-Razzaz Tomb.
Verses from al-Shafi’i’s poetry calligraphed on the walls, and reflecting key moments from his life, guide visitors upstairs. The first hall introduces the preservation efforts that took place at the dome. It leads to a film screening area where visitors can get a visual overview of the conservation work and the dome’s surrounding context.
The excavations hall provides insight into a Fatimid dome that pre-dates the existing one by means of a reconstruction model and carefully curated selection of discovered artifacts. The finds hall highlights significant elements that were uncovered during the conservation process, mainly taking the form of hidden inscriptions and layers. Before exiting, a large mural highlights key buildings in the southern cemetery, inviting visitors to explore further.
