We’re delighted to invite you to the new edition of Al‑Khalifa Camps: Tumar (Scroll)—the very first series of Al‑Khalifa traditional Crafts Camps.
Over five days, children will step into the world of the waraqqīn (traditional papermakers), journeying through paper‑making and color‑mixing. Participants enjoy a fully integrated experience: visiting the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Library & Archives, experimenting with materials, and creating a personal art piece from the first sheet of paper all the way to binding their own notebook.

Camp Schedule
Day 1 | Muqahhar (Ahar Paper)
We kick off with a fun ice-breaker and an overview of the week ahead, then head to Al-Khalifa Heritage Park. There, campers learn how plant-based dyes are made and embark on a playful pigment scavenger hunt. Afterward, everyone gathers in Heritage Works Space to hand-make natural dyes, paper (preparing it for writing or printing), and dive into an entertaining introduction to color theory.
Day 2 | Waraq (Papermaker)
Our adventure continues at Egyptian National Library Museum- Dar Al Kutub, where participants tour the manuscript production process and view priceless heritage pieces. Back at camp, the kids roll up their sleeves to craft handmade paper using traditional tools and techniques. To close the day, we begin the first step of bookbinding by sewing the pages together—turning loose sheets into the beginnings of their own notebooks.
Day 3 | Khatm (Seal)
We kick off with a tour of the Museum of Islamic Art, exploring patterns, motifs, inscriptions, and visual elements integral to the world of manuscripts. After the museum visit, we return to the workshop for a lino-cut printing session inspired by what we’ve seen, then continue bookbinding to advance their journals toward completion.
Day 4 | khuiūt (Threads)
The day opens with a hand-embroidery workshop: participants replicate ornamental designs from the Museum of Islamic Art and embroider their own patterns. In the afternoon, they finish sewing their notebooks in preparation for crafting a cover of genuine leather.
Day 5 | Makhtūt (Manuscript)
On the final morning, participants complete the binding process by attaching their natural-leather covers and embellishing them with their favorite motifs. To conclude, each child assembles a personal journal documenting their entire journey through the camp—from the very first sheet to the finished notebook.

Fees cover all art and craft materials, transportation between heritage sites and the Heritage workspace, daily snack, and entrance tickets to the historic venues.
