Al-Khalifa Calligraphy: Tour and Workshop
10 Jan, 2023
Ready to join us on our next walking-tour with the Citadel as your morning view? And better yet, join a calligraphy workshop where you will learn the basics of the art of calligraphy!
Arabic calligraphy is linked to many aspects of our cultural history, including religion, art and architecture. As time progresses, calligraphic styles evolve and often adapt to represent the characteristics of the ruling regimes in each era. Starting at Sultan Hasan Mosque and as we walk along al-Siyufiyya street, we will take a look at the various and most common styles, point out their notable characteristics and even learn to decipher texts engraved on the walls of monuments that have lasted hundreds of years.
Following that, we will be joined by Mohamed Mahy, a professional calligrapher and instructor who will introduce us to Arabic calligraphy style and the technique of using traditional writing tools. Each participant will be given their own bamboo calligraphy pen and ink, which they get to take home to practice with.
This event is part of the Khalifa Tours program. It is organised by the Built Environment Collective and all revenues go towards supporting the sustainability of the NGO’s educational and community programs in al-Khalifa neighbourhood.
