Spend the Day in Khalifa 3
21 Jan, 2016
The primary aim of Spend the Day in Khalifa 3 is the inauguration of the conservation projects of the mid 13th century dome of Shajar al-Durr (funded by the American Research Centre in Egypt with additional funding from the Barakat Trust) and the mid 12th century shrines to descendants of the prophet al-Sayyida Ruqayya, al-Ja’fari and ‘Atika (funded by the Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation). It will include guided tours of the street’s heritage, performances in the street and the heritage sites, and exhibition of the street’s crafts, a group sketching and photography workshop and activities for children. The event will also showcase the results of two preparatory workshops the first on mural art inspired by the street’s heritage and the second to redesign the traditional Ramadan lantern made of tin and glass using contemporary approaches and traditional techniques. Furthermore, it will highlight results and fundraise for the current efforts to clean the street and resolve its waste management issues. Finally, it will include the closing event of Athar Lina|Fus-ha, a program bringing Syrian and Egyptian children for educational activities addressing acceptance and tolerance through emphasizing common historical ties. Spend the Day in Khalifa 3 is organised by Athar Lina – a joint initiative between the Ministry of Antiquities and the Built Environment Collective | Megawra - in partnership with Cairo Governorate and Mashroo3 Kheir. Athar Lina|Fus-ha is organized in partnership with Terre des Hommes with funding from UNHCR. Spend the Day in Khalifa 3 is funded by AIC Finance in addition to private donations matched by Zoomaal.
